streetscape history
All aspects of the City Centre Streetscape and Traffic Management Programme have been drawn into a co-ordinated, phased programme to improve city centre traffic flow and public transport services, upgrade pedestrian facilities and enhance the business, shopping and living environment. Consultation started in 2004 and a Streetscape Working Group was formed in January 2005 to accelerate progress.
Original proposals for a pedestrian priority scheme within Inverness Old Town were redesigned and further modified following public consultation. A rolling 90 week construction contract, intended to ensure consistent quality, was awarded in November 2006.
Much of the new infrastructure built to meet recent city growth is considered bland or untidy. In a drive to improve the city’s appearance, roundabouts and city approach roads in need of environmental improvement were appraised, in conjunction with the community organisation which assists with floral and landscaping displays. The next stage is to prioritise areas for attention, design low maintenance planting schemes and identify opportunities for public art.
Works on the Millburn Embankment between Eastgate and Victoria Drive have produced major improvements to the streetscape. Further works are planned for the Old Perth Road area.
