CONTEXT

Public art plays a big part in Inverness City Partnership's new vision for the old town area of Inverness with the idea of the historic core of the city once more being the vibrant heart of modern Inverness.  It is a vision of public spaces, a place where culture, history and the arts combine to show the world what is unique about our city-region and give a much needed boost of civilised public life to everyday experience for Invernessians and visitors.

As a part of the City Centre Streetscape Programme, Lead Artist Matt Baker has been appointed to commission temporary and permanent public art works by local and national artists. Matt is also a member of the design team (led by designers Land Use Consultants) so that his research and commissions are integrated into the overall design. The position is funded in part by a grant from the Scottish Arts Council.

Matt was Lead Artist on the successful and high-profile Gorbals regeneration in Glasgow, where he commissioned over 30 works from established and emerging artists as well as artist-led community projects: www.theartworksprogramme.org

Matt began his work in Inverness in early 2006 and conceived the acclaimed 'Imagining the Centre' project in September 06 when 14 Highland artists amazed and delighted locals with the different Church Street that they built one Saturday.  This project has now developed into a series of proposals for permanent artworks in the old town area as part of the £6 million streetscape regeneration programme.
